Apu Apustaja is Finnish for “Help Helper.” He is not Pepe. He is the too-sincere little brother of the frog family. Baby Pepe energy.
Apu is a crudely drawn, childlike, kind variant of the internet frog. Big eyes, naive lines, broken English, always trying to help even when it goes wrong.
Also known as Helper or Peepo. He stands for innocence, empathy, and frens. Not the troll, not smug frog.
The character showed up in early 2016 on Ylilauta, a Finnish imageboard, drawn in the Spurdo Spärde style: deliberately clumsy MS Paint.
In March 2016 he landed on 4chan. Since then Apu has been his own meme. Inspired by Pepe, but distinct.
Same visual family. Two different characters. Two opposite energies.
Created by Matt Furie in the comic Boy’s Club. “Feels good man.” Became the universal meme frog.
